Advent Calendar Pelagona Door 5 Angkor Wat Cambodia

Door Number 5 takes you on a trip - no boarding necessary. Bayon Temple is part of the UNESCO world heritage Angkor Wat, Cambodia. Cambodia is also home to our partner rattan weaving group.

Angkor Wat goes back to the city of Angkor which was home to about one million people during the Khmer Empire. This empire was the largest empire in Southeast Asia in the 12th century. Today, Angkor Wat is a reminder of the powerful empire which lasted until the 15th century. Most people know the central structure of Angkor Wat but there is much more than that: on an area of over 16 hectares, there are many other temples and sites. Bayon Temple, famous for its many faces, is one of them.

Tourism is a major driver of the Cambodian economy. Compared to its neighbours such as Thailand, Cambodia is among the poorest countries in Asia. A large number of Cambodian women living in villages are unemployed. Even if they have a job, their income is less than USD 2.50 per day. As most families have between 3-5 children, it makes it almost impossible for them to survive. If you buy an item of our rattan collection you contribute to a sustainable income for the women behind the products and their families.
